About the role
Within the Data & Analytics team we help Tesco, our customers and the communities where we operate to get the most value from data. We build and run Tesco’s data platforms, we architect and engineer data onto these platforms, provide capabilities and tools to the analytics community across Tesco, and develop data products at scale.
As Software Development Manager in Data Science Engineering, within Data & Analytics, you’ll lead software development in one of Tesco’s most strategic technology areas. You’ll work with our software engineers, data scientists, product managers, systems engineers, and analytics professionals to build robust software products that deliver valuable outcomes for our customers. You will be responsible for the software throughout the lifecycle; we maintain a DevOps culture, employing continuous integration and delivery, supporting our code through to production and beyond.
In the Data and Analytics team, we focus on solving complex business problems enabling the use of data across Tesco and engineering data products that can be deployed at scale to our customers. Our work spans critical business areas including Stores, Online, Fulfilment, CRM and loyalty across the countries where we operate.

This role requires you to be based in or near Kraków, as you will spend 60% (3 days) of your week collaborating with colleagues at our office locations or local sites and the rest remotely.

You will be responsible for
As a Software Development Manager, your primary responsibility is to build and maintain a passionate, engaged, and effective development team of engineers. You'll do this by taking a deep interest in the people that report to you, making sure they are happy, motivated, and challenged in what they are doing, guiding them to reach pragmatic technical solutions, and keep yourself close to the code (without becoming a blocker). You'll also take ownership when things go wrong but
celebrate success collectively and, in short, act as a multiplier of your team’s effectiveness.
Specifically, you will:
• Foster the careers of the engineers reporting into you by finding
opportunities for growth, coaching, addressing concerns and implementing
performance management.
• Continuously improve our engineering practices across data science
products to operate at pace and at scale, using and promoting MLOps
practices to deliver quality production software.
• Work closely with Product Management to identify and minimise risk within
an outcome and help prioritise and evolve a workable technical solution
ready for delivery.
• Contribute to group discussions on system design and architecture.
• Contribute to our platform strategy.
• Build globally, ensuring consistency in approach across all our locations.
• Inspire the engineering teams to produce quality solutions.
• Grow the capability of Tesco Technology as a whole by becoming involved in
our engineering hiring and being passionate about building successful and
diverse teams.
• Contribute to building a team culture for continuous improvement and an
environment where engineers want to work.
• Continually look for how we can evolve and improve our technology,
processes and practices.
• Keep your technical skills up to date and monitoring new technologies,
processes, understanding how they might benefit the Technology team and
wider Tesco.
You will need
Experience relevant for this job:
• Experience with management of software engineering teams.
• Track record of driving technical excellence and change.
• Experience working in a global team distributed across multiple locations.
• Very strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle.
• Experience working with multiple software development methodologies
including Scrum & Kanban.
• ML engineering including feature engineering, versioning and packaging,
model training and distribution.
• Strong experience working with distributed computing frameworks.
• Architecture of solutions to integrate Data Science products into client
applications.
• Enterprise integration patterns, microservice architectures and event
sourcing.
• Containerisation ecosystems and other resource, workflow and
orchestration systems.
• Experience of automation, configuration management, multi-cloud and
hybridisation, IAAS and PAAS.
Skills relevant for the job:
