About the role
Within Tesco Data & Analytics, we find ways to use data to help our customers and the communities where we operate. We build and run Tesco’s data platforms, architect and engineer data onto these platforms, provide capabilities and tools to the analytics community across Tesco, and develop data products at scale.

As a backend engineer within Data Science you have the vital role of integrating our capabilities into Tesco's systems which is critical to creating value. You will bring your experience of implementing scalable backend systems to our teams while having the opportunity to work in the exciting ML and AI space.

Our Data Science teams are involved in a broad range of projects, spanning across supply chain, logistics, store and online. These include projects in the areas of Operations Optimisations, Commercial Decision Support (e.g. Forecasting and Range Optimisation), Online (e.g. Search and Recommendation) and Intelligent Edge (e.g. Computer Vision). Our Machine Learning Engineers work alongside our data scientists, helping with everything from development of tools and platforms, code optimisations through to deployment of solutions on the edge, cloud and big-data environments.

You will be responsible for
As a backend engineer within Data Science you have the vital role of integrating our capabilities into Tesco's systems which is critical to creating value. You will bring your experience of implementing scalable backend systems to our teams while having the opportunity to work in the exciting ML and AI space. You’ll collaborate with engineers, data scientists, product managers, and analytics professionals to deliver innovative outcomes for our customers.

You’ll work within and across our Engineering and Data Science teams, delivering production-grade software that improves how we serve our customers and run our operations.

Responsibilities
• Design and implement backend services and APIs using Python and FastAPI.
• Participate in system architecture and design discussions, with a focus on scalability and performance.
• Translate product and data science requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Collaborate across teams to integrate machine learning models into production systems.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
• Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers.
• Monitor and support production systems, resolving incidents and performing root cause analysis.
• Continuously improve development practices, tooling, and processes.
• Share knowledge and mentor others within the engineering community.
• Apply SDLC best practices to ensure reliable and maintainable software delivery.

You will need
You come from either an Engineering or Data Science background, with a good understanding of the Data Science Toolkit (Programming, Machine Learning, MLOps etc) and bringing data driven solutions into production. You therefore tick the majority of the following points:

Key Requirements
• Strong proficiency in Python, with a focus on backend development.
• Hands-on experience with FastAPI (or similar frameworks like Flask or Django).
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Awareness of concepts related to MLOps integrating ML models into production systems.
• Understanding of software engineering principles, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience with version control (Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Exposure to observability tools (e.g., New Relic, Grafana, Prometheus, Splunk).
• Experience working in cloud environments, ideally Azure.
• Comfortable working in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban).
• Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Bonus: Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Apache Spark), and a background in retail, logistics, or ecommerce.
