About the role
As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will act as a trusted business partner across marketing, loyalty and customer propositions, supporting everything from high-profile campaigns to pricing, promotions and personalisation.
You will work end-to-end from concept through to execution, helping to manage legal and reputational risk, and advising on regulatory and competitor challenges (including ASA matters).
You will also support key intellectual property matters, including portfolio management, disputes and enforcement, ensuring we protect the Tesco brand while enabling the business to deliver commercially at pace.

You will be responsible for
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, acting as a trusted business partner and legal adviser across customer, marketing and loyalty matters
  • Advise on all aspects of Tesco marketing campaigns and key customer propositions (including Clubcard), from concept through to execution, providing expertise on marketing, consumer, pricing and promotions law
  • Draft and manage ASA complaints, both to and from competitors and customers
  • Supervise the day-to-day work of the marketing paralegal and support the marketing sign-off process
  • Support legal transformation initiatives across marketing, including developing content, tools, improving intake processes and identifying efficiency opportunities
  • Provide strategic advice on intellectual property protection across a range of brand projects
  • Advise on and manage a broad range of IP disputes (both hard and soft IP), from registry and domain name proceedings through to more complex disputes
  • Draft and negotiate IP aspects of commercial contracts, including sponsorship agreements
  • Work closely with external trade mark advisors on portfolio management and complex disputes
  • Consider stakeholder needs, identify connected risks and deliver pragmatic, risk-based solutions
  • Deliver IP and marketing training across the business
  • Drive forward legal transformation plans across marketing and IP, including embracing the use of AI
You will need
  • To be a proactive self-starter, comfortable working autonomously and leading on matters
  • To be a qualified lawyer with strong experience in marketing and consumer protection law
  • The ability to simplify complex issues, see the bigger picture and work efficiently under pressure within a high-volume, varied workload
  • Experience across intellectual property, including both portfolio management and dispute work
  • A robust and effective style, with the confidence to operate in a collaborative environment that values constructive challenge and open debate
  • An excellent academic background, with experience gained at a top-tier law firm or in-house
  • Strong communication skills, alongside a commercial, pragmatic approach and the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the business
