About the role
As a Senior Android Developer you will be working for Transcend Retail Solutions, a subsidiary of Tesco, set up to sell the same solutions deployed by Tesco powering their $8bn grocery online business. With world-leading efficiency and scale, we are on a mission to help other retailers around the world create mobile experiences that their customers, colleagues, and stakeholders love. 

You will be responsible for the end-to-end development and quality of Transcend’s Android applications, catering for the varying needs of our customers. You will work closely with colleagues from Engineering, Product and Customer Success to shape, build and deploy robust, high-performance Android applications used at scale.

You will be responsible for
As a Senior Android Developer at Tesco, you will: 

• Design, development, delivery and maintenance of core Android features from concept to production, redefining complicated flows into performant, robust and intuitive experiences. 
• Own the end-to-end mobile engineering lifecycle: requirements, architecture, implementation, testing, CI/CD and post-release monitoring. 
• Build observable, testable code using various types of tests, use telemetry/ analytics and crash reports to measure impact and application health. 
• Work with backend engineers to define and implement REST API integrations, caching strategies, offline support and data persistence 
• Contribute to and evolve our mobile engineering tooling and CI/CD pipelines, automated release processes and internal app distribution. 
• Partner with Product Managers to understand and define user problems, scope technical solutions and build testable prototypes for both new and existing features 
• Collaborate with UX researchers and designers to translate wireframes and prototypes into pixel-accurate and accessible Android UI 
• Promote inclusive and accessible mobile experiences following Android accessibility guidelines and good UX practices 
 • Help expand and maintain our mobile component library / design system for Android to keep UI consistent and maintainable.
You will need
To be considered for this role, you will need: 

• 5+ years of professional mobile development experience, with a strong focus on native Android development. 
• Solid knowledge of Kotlin (preferred) and practical Java experience where applicable. 
• Deep knowledge of Android SDK and platform fundamentals: activity/fragment lifecycle, intents, background work, services, notifications, storage and permissions. 
• Experience with modern Android UI: Jetpack Compose and/or AndroidX View system; ability to pick the right approach per context 
• Practical experience with architecture patterns, state management (experience with Redux is preferred), concurrency and async programming. 
• Proven track record of writing testable code and building test suites (unit tests, integration tests, UI tests). 
• Knowledge of CI/CD, automated testing pipelines and production release processes for Android 
• Experience in multi-module and multi-flavour applications 
• Hands-on experience profiling and improving app performance and memory usage, and diagnosing crashes/ANRs via tools like Android Profiler or Crashlytics. 
• Comfortable working with analytics, feature flags, remote config and using metrics to inform product decisions. 
• Strong collaboration skills - you’ve partnered closely with product, design, QA and backend engineers in cross-functional teams. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to present technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders. 
• Experience mentoring and coaching engineers and helping set standards for architecture and code quality. 
• A pragmatic approach to engineering: you care about shipping, quality and maintainability. 
• Previous experience in retail, logistics or enterprise mobile products is an advantage.
