About the role
As Principal Software Development Engineering at Tesco, I am responsible for driving the technical strategy and design of Identity and Access Management solutions, which underpins the security and the overall defence capability of Tesco. This includes technology leadership for a team of Developers and System Engineers, covering software and system development of IAM technologies, systems and tools related to identity lifecycle, identity & Access governance, privileged access management, and overall access management.
I work in an agile manner, responding to the changing threat landscape, and working closely with Product Management and Identity Security Controls teams to ensure that what we are designing and developing is optimal in terms of scalability, availability, operability, cost and usability.
I am seasoned Architect and have great understanding and knowledge of Cyber Security practices, and dynamic professional, will efficiently collaborating with other stakeholders like Workplace and System Infra, Network and Cloud Platform teams.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Software Development Engineer to technically lead our Identity and Access Management (IAM) team and serve as a leader with vision in this space . The ideal candidate will have an understanding of Product Development, Infrastructure and IAM technologies, strong leadership skills, and a consistent record of implementing secure and scalable IAM solutions. This role requires close collaboration with the IAM operations team and product management to ensure the integrity and security of our systems and data.
• Spearhead a highly skilled IAM engineering team, providing mentorship and guidance to ensure high performance and top notch development team and systems.
• Develop and implement IAM Platforms strategies, architectures, and roadmaps aligned with business objectives and security requirements.
• Lead the design, development, and deployment of complex IAM solutions, including authentication, authorization, identity governance, and access controls.
• Build and maintain robust IAM platforms to modern engineering excellence practices, ensuring scalability and resilience to meet the needs of Tesco.
• Own the issues/barriers in the rollout of new solutions, and get them closed with technical expertise and required collaboration.
• Partner with the Product Management team to align IAM solutions with business needs and user requirements.
• Collaborate with the IAM Security Controls team to understand and resolve the painpoints in their BAU tasks.
• Monitor and evaluate emerging IAM and product development technologies and trends, making recommendations for adoption where appropriate.
• Engage with existing / new vendors and third party IAM solutions to ensure effective implementation and support.
• Drive continuous improvement of IAM processes, tools, and practices to enhance security, user experience, and operational efficiency.
• Respond to security incidents related to identity and access management and lead efforts to resolve them promptly and effectively.
• Influence the technology direction of the organisation towards adopting zero trust and identity based authentication frameworks.
• Mentor team of developers and system engineering in terms of technical skills and practices.
You will need
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
• 12+ years of experience in IT and full stack Software development, with at least 5 years in technically leading a team, ideally within Security space.
• Strong software development background (preferably with Java, React.js, Postgress, Kafka, Azure Cloud services) with experience in architecture, designing and building inhouse solutions, preferably IAM systems
• Experience of implementing and improvising DevOps practices for in-house and cloud platforms
• Understanding of IAM concepts and technologies, including Vaulting, SSO, MFA, LDAP, OAuth, SAML, and identity governance.
• Experience of building/leveraging LLM for product development and processes automations
• Demonstrable experience in building and maintaining IAM or similar platforms in complex, large scale environments.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
• Great understanding or IT infrastructure components such as network perimeter, domain controllers, VSphere, Kubernetes and cloud.
• Experience of mentoring a highly skilled team of developers and system engineering.
• Demonstrable experience of improving an existing system for better performance and resiliency with help of technologies and DevOps processes
• Great communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to nontechnical stakeholders.
• Architectural understanding of zero trust and identity-based authentication frameworks.
